Reason for Interest in the United States
• Increasing hauling and disposal costs
• Reduction in sludge volume (85 – 90%) less supplemental energy.
− Produces gaseous fuel (non-condensable & condensable)
− Fuel is burned and the thermal energy recovered for drying
• Easier to Permit
− Doesn’t fall under requirements of Sewage Sludge Incinerator (SSI) rule
• Carbon sequestration
• PFAS is removed from biochar
− Fate in gaseous emissions not yet known
