The challenge of responsibly – and economically – reducing and treating food waste, slurry, sewage sludge and manure is an ever-growing shared concern for industries across multiple sectors. However, mindsets are changing to view ‘waste’ as a valuable resource, one that can – and should – be processed and re-used or recycled.

The Challenge

Sustainable, practical and cost-effective slurry management – as part of a circular economy – is the key to safeguarding the health of our land and our water. Traditional methods of slurry and digestate handling are no longer viable or compliant with legislation, particularly in the growing number of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZ) across the UK. Nutrient application of organic material onto arable land is increasingly under scrutiny to reduce the risks from nitrogen and phosphorus, such as groundwater pollution and the eutrophication of land.
