The sustainable energy efficient route to advanced digestion
Hydrolysis & Pasteurisation
• Hydrolysis –first stage methane production
• Thermal (THP) or enzymic (Helea)
• Breaks large complex macromolecules down into smaller soluble molecules (monomers, dimers) – improves biodegradability (especially
secondary sludges) – more biogas at a faster rate
• Hydrolysis is rate determining step – moving hydrolysis out of digesters makes process more efficient
• Operate at higher digester VS loadings – reduce volume of new digesters/increase throughput through existing
• Pasteurisation – kills pathogens – recycle to agriculture
• Pasteurisation – classic time temperature relationship – the higher the temperature, the lower the holding time (e.g. 55 oC for 4 h, 70 oC for 1 h)
