Abstract
Following the significant storm overflow discharge reduction challenges that have been set by regulators, digital solutions and process automation are key to planning on a regional scale at pace. Furthermore, blue-green solutions like Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are being increasingly considered alongside traditional grey engineering solutions. Developed by RPS, bloom is an automated opportunity mapping digital solution which selects appropriate SuDS interventions, tailored for strategic frameworks in the wastewater industry. bloom
has the following key innovative features which are discussed in this paper:
- Following the identification of feasible SuDS opportunities in a study area, specific impermeable area (IA) which could drain by gravity to an existing sewer are associated with each identified opportunity.
- SuDS opportunities are sized based on the flow generated from these impermeable surfaces to ensure solutions are no larger than required hence minimising cost.
- SuDS features are ranked by cost effectiveness (cost to separate each opportunities associated IA from the sewer system).
- Scenarios including different types of SuDS solutions can be automatically exported as ICM model scenarios to simulate and predict their overall hydraulic impact on flooding and storm overflow discharges.
- Results of scenario models can be used to suggest cost-optimised hybrid solutions for specific drivers.
