WWTPs are large emitters of GHG (Fig. A). These can be mitigated by treating the sewage sludge via AD to produce biogas.
Ammonia stripping for N recovery is an alternative to biological N removal. As side-stream process to the AD it can increase the CH4 production, reduce the N2O emissions, recover N, and prevent its fixation.

We applied an ammonia stripping treatment to the outlet of the full-scale primary digester from Linköping WWTP and operated a control and a stripped secondary reactors.
